What the service is

Outpatient rehabilitation psychological assessments and therapy for people who have experienced a recent health condition, illness, or disability.

What we do

We can help you to:

  • Adjust to your health condition.
  • Help with motivation to do well with rehabilitation.
  • Deal with pain.
  • Deal with grief and loss.
  • Reduce the impact of depression, anxiety, sleep, and relationship issues on your ability to manage your health condition.

When to access this service

When you have experienced a health condition, illness, disability, you have had a recent hospital stay and you are struggling to cope or are experiencing distress.

What to expect

You will be asked about your current situation and concerns, your medical history, and other important things. The psychologist will discuss with you your therapy options and work with you to set goals and make a treatment plan. Therapy may occur over multiple sessions. Please allow 60-90 minutes for the first consultation and 60 minutes thereafter.

Who should access this service

Referrals are accepted for adults (18 years and over) requiring assessment and therapy of their adjustment to complex medical conditions. Family members and carers are also seen where appropriate.

How to access this service

Referrals for rehabilitation and psychology assessment and intervention are accepted from General Practitioners, Medical Specialists, Psychologists and other Allied Health clinicians. Referrals are accepted in writing either by mail, email, fax and phone.

  • Your glasses (if needed)
  • Your hearing aids (if needed)

How to get there, including by public transport    

Port Kembla Hospital is located on Cowper Street. Pedestrians can access the hospital from the main entrance on Cowper Street. There is a bus stop located close to the hospital with the following services available - Premier Illawarra 52, 53 and 54.

Car parking

There is limited parking available for patients, families and carers at the back of the hospital, via Fairfax Road.

Advice for disabled in getting to the service

There are disabled parking spots in the car park. The drop off zone at the front door of the hospital can be accessed via the entrance on Cowper Street.

Head of Discipline - Psychology and Principal Psychologist

Pip Bowden is Principal Psychologist and Head of Discipline for the Illawarra and Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). She brings over 30 years’ experience in Psychology including clinical and leadership roles in  Health and Mental Health settings across the hospital and community.

Pip is responsible for providing professional leadership of Psychology services across the LHD including Hospital and community based services.

The ISLHD Psychology Department provides a broad range of clinical services and is committed to providing a comprehensive and evidence-based service.
