Wollongong Hospital – Haematology Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment

Overview

Clinical Haematology specialises in the diagnosis and management of malignant haematological disorders including leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms and myelodysplastic syndromes as well as non-malignant disorders.  We have a very active Clinical Trials Unit providing access to new cancer treatments for patients.

The ISLHD Haematology service treats all aspects of benign and malignant haematological disorders, providing multi-disciplinary inpatient and outpatient care including autologous stem cell transplantation.  Patients requiring allogeneic stem cell/bone marrow transplantation are referred to an appropriate allogeneic transplant centre in Sydney.  Paediatric haematology inpatients under the age of 15 are cared for by an appropriate children’s hospital.  Pre-allogeneic transplant care and diagnostic evaluation as well as post-transplant care is conducted locally in consultation with the allogeneic transplant unit. Adolescents aged 15-18 are managed locally with advice from the state-wide Adolescent and Young Adult Network.

Wollongong Hospital services

The service at Wollongong is a tertiary level service. The initial management of high grade haematological malignancies and other life-threatening disorders such as acute leukaemia, high grade lymphoma, rapidly progressive myeloma associated with acute renal failure or spinal cord compression, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and brisk haemolysis require admission to Wollongong Hospital.  Patients requiring complex chemotherapy protocols that cannot be delivered as an outpatient and patients with unpredictable platelet transfusion requirements are also managed at Wollongong. The therapeutic apheresis service at Wollongong Hospital collects stem cells for transplantation and provides emergency and chronic pheresis for haematological, neurological and renal conditions.
