Overview

What the service is

The Wollongong Mental Health Unit is a 20 bed unit directed at the treatment and recovery of consumers with an acute mental health problem.

What we do

To ensure consumers receive the best possible care that will assist them to make a speedy recovery, relevant services, including Drug and Alcohol Services, psychology, social work or occupational therapy will be offered at the earliest opportunity; and when consumers are ready to return to the community, they can be referred to a rehabilitation or community service as needed.

While consumers are on the unit, each consumer will have their own bedroom, and there are laundry facilities available if needed. The unit environment includes two lounge areas, a community dining room, and a spacious courtyard with access to exercise equipment. There is also an activity room where consumers have the option of occupying their time with craft activities. There is also a Quiet room for consumers, and nursing staff are available 24 hours a day.

What to expect

Consumers are admitted for different reasons. It is important to be aware of your treatment plan and legal status - discuss this with your doctor and nurse. Staff on the unit run a program of activities that is aimed at assisting your recovery. The day program runs from Monday to Friday.

You will require a change of clothes and personal toiletries. Any money and valuables (including mobile phones) will be placed in the unit safe on admission
