Psychology

Overview

What the service is

Psychologists provide psychological services to inpatients. Psychologists are trained in understanding human behaviour and have expertise in providing assessment and treatment for psychological issues, using evidence based practice. Treatments are provided on an individual and group basis to customers and their families/ carers.

What we do

The Clinical Neuropsychologist / Clinical Psychologist can see inpatients to offer the following support:

  • Help with adjustment to and coping with current illness or disability.
  • Motivation to do well in rehabilitation or management of their illness.
  • Reduce the impact of depression, anxiety, sleep, pain, grief and loss, and relationship issues on their ability to manage their health condition.
  • Aid in diagnosis when the reason for cognitive decline is unclear (e.g. presence of a dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease versus mood or delirium or other neurological condition).
  • Understand how their medical condition has changed their memory, thinking, and behaviour.
  • Learn what these changes might mean for going home, returning to work, and returning to driving.
  • Support people with cognitive difficulties to make informed decisions (e.g. accommodation or medical) or help with the determination of decision-making capacity.
  • Compensation, remediation strategies, and behaviour modification suggestions so patients can better perform at their rehabilitation.

What to expect

A Psychologist will meet you at bedside and arrange a confidential space to talk with you. You will be asked about your current situation and concerns, your medical history, and other important things. The psychologist will discuss with you your therapy options and work with you to set goals and make a treatment plan. Therapy may occur over multiple sessions.
