Multicultural Health

Overview

The Multicultural Health Service aims to help our multicultural population achieve equitable health outcomes. We do this by helping to improve knowledge of, and access to, local health services and health information.

We also work collaboratively with our region's health services and clinicians to deliver culturally appropriate care for patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

What we do

We coordinate prevention programs to ensure that our culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) residents have the same access to equitable and quality public health services, care and information as their fellow residents.
 
We link in with the district’s health services as well as other community partners as an important way to help achieve better health outcomes for the region’s CALD populations. A large number of our programs and projects are run in partnership with community organisations.
 
We also work with staff to support them when working with CALD clients.  We can provide training and workforce development, collaboration on projects and resource development.

The Multicultural Health Service currently has the following priority areas:

  • Healthy Ageing
  • Chronic and complex conditions
  • Refugee and new arrivals
  • Regional and rural populations

What to expect

Multicultural Health Officers work with clients, patients, carers and community groups to empower them to take greater control of their health care.  We acknowledge that for empowerment to work there must be trust between our patients and staff involved in the provision of health care. 
 
Our bi-lingual Multicultural Health Officers speak the following community languages: 

  • Arabic
  • Macedonian
  • Greek
  • Italian
  • Spanish
  • Hindi
  • French
  • Marathi
