How do I access this service?
Our administration team will receive your referral directly from your General Practitioner (GP) or specialist. You will then be contacted to make an appointment. Your first appointment may not be with the specific specialist you were referred to as we have a team of specialists and on occasion you may see both a junior doctor and specialist.
What fees do I pay?
We are a Bulk Billing service, therefore there is no cost for your appointment if you hold a current Medicare or Veteran Card.
Where is my first appointment?
Your first appointment will be held in the Clinic at either Illawarra Cancer Care Centre, Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre, Wollongong Hospital or Milton-Ulladulla Community Cancer Services Centre.
You can find more information on these locations:
What do I bring to my first appointment?
When we make your booking an information pack will be posted or emailed to you. Please complete the pack and bring it with you to your appointment. You will also need your Medicare or Department of Veteran Card.
Your specialist will ask you to provide as much information as possible about your health, including allergies, medical conditions and disabilities. It can be helpful to prepare a list to bring to your appointment.
How long is my first appointment?
You should allow at least an hour.
What else should I expect?
As part of our registration we will request your photo be taken for patient recognition. Your image is strictly for identification purposes.
Your specialist may ask you if you;
- Smoke, drink alcohol or use recreational drugs
- Are being treated by another doctor
- Understand why you have been referred for tests or treatments
- Have religious or cultural beliefs that may make it difficult to have treatment
- Want to be treated as a private patient
Can I bring a support person?
Yes. A relative, carer or support person can accompany you to your appointment.
I need an interpreter
When booking your first appointment please advise administration that you require an interpreter, including AUSLAN and this can be arranged on your behalf at no cost. Interpreter services can be provided in person, via video conference or by telephone.
Can I seek a second opinion?
After your first appointment you have the right to seek a second opinion on the treatment that has been recommended to you. Depending on the nature of your condition the health service will provide advice on the availability of an alternative medical practitioner.
What is formal consent?
You will be asked to complete paperwork acknowledging you give approval to receive treatment such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy. You have the right to withhold consent, in which case you will not be treated.
