Illawarra Shoalhaven currently supports advanced traineeships in Medical Simulation. This program has been in place now since 2013.
The program is a comprehensive one which allows the trainee exposure to and experience with a broad range of educational techniques with a focus on simulation. This involves the spectrum of medical simulation from the use of specific skills trainers through high fidelity multidisciplinary simulation and the use of standardised patients.
It uniquely allows for experience in the delivery of simulation in a variety of venues including the Education Centre itself, clinical units within major hospitals, small rural facilities and University Campuses. It also has a strong focus on multidisciplinary simulation. It incorporates completion of courses in the principles and delivery of simulation; and in debriefing.
Supervision
The principal supervisor is the Director of ISHEC who has significant experience in medical education and in using medical simulation and has completed training at the Centre for Medical Simulation in Boston. Trainees have regular formal and informal interaction with the supervisor and progressive guidance in areas to consider and elements to improve education delivery.
Placement Structure
Current placements are available through General Medicine and Emergency Medicine with processes well advanced to introduce a placement in Anaesthesia in late 2019.
Trainees will be appointed as honorary Clinical Lecturers in Graduate Medicine, UoW.
Learning Objectives
Learning objectives irrespective of home service will include, but are not limited to:
- Understanding educational principles
- Experience in developing and refining simulation scenarios
- Gaining knowledge and skills in various methods of education delivery within the simulation environment
- Experience in teaching multi and interdisciplinary groups of varying levels of professional training.
- Experience in teaching in multidisciplinary faculties
- Developing expertise in using medium and / or high fidelity simulation equipment
- Experience in teaching non-technical skills
- Understanding the principles of crisis resource management and human factors
- Gaining knowledge and skills in debriefing and feedback
- Understanding the principles of assessment
Activities/Duties
Trainees receive formal instruction via:
- undertaking recognised simulation courses - “Introduction to Simulation” , “Conversations in Clinical Supervision” and “Introduction to Debriefing”. This is initially as a participant then as a facilitator.
- receiving education from the ISHEC staff in both the educational and technical aspects of simulation – demonstrated by a set curriculum and teaching program
- education in curriculum development and organisation
There is also an expectation that the trainee will have the opportunity to:
- develop an educational module – past projects have included “An introduction to Debrief”
- carry out a specific project – e.g. “Multiagency Simulation”, “Video debrief vs live debrief”.
- deliver education programs both as Convener and as faculty in support of other services
Trainees have a continuous schedule of course attendance and delivery throughout their attachment with time set aside for content development and project coordination.
