The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) and the University of Wollongong (UOW) research partnership was formed in mid-2016, with the aim of supporting two main streams of research:
- Priority-driven research, which align with the priorities of ISLHD and
- clinician/investigator-driven research, which align with the research interests of the clinician/investigator.
The partnership also supports student projects (both undergraduate and postgraduate) many of which are being undertaken by ISLHD clinicians. In order to meet these aims, the Centre for Health Research Illawarra Shoalhaven Population (CHRISP) research team and the Illawarra Health Information Platform (IHIP), a big data platform, were established.
The CHRISP team, staffed by 5.8 FTE UOW and ISLHD employees, has expertise in research, medicine, public health, statistics, epidemiology, information technology and data integration. The IHIP platform is a powerful stand-alone data linkage IT system, which can provide non-identifiable health data sets to researchers following appropriate human ethics and governance approvals.
